Overall, production recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $4.2B. From 2023 to 2024, production of growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2024, overseas purchases of organo-sulphur compounds other than thiocarbamates, dithiocarbamates, thiuram sulphides and methionine were finally on the rise to reach 68K tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure at 93K tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of organo-sulphur compounds other than thiocarbamates, dithiocarbamates, thiuram sulphides and methionine stood at $393M in 2024. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of 25%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $481M. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The United States (24K tons), South Korea (12K tons) and Japan (12K tons) were the main suppliers of imports of organo-sulphur compounds other than thiocarbamates, dithiocarbamates, thiuram sulphides and methionine to China, together accounting for 62% of total imports. Belgium, Malaysia, India and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +24.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest organo-sulphur compounds other than thiocarbamates, dithiocarbamates, thiuram sulphides and methionine suppliers to China were the United States ($119M), Japan ($114M) and South Korea ($67M), with a combined 62% share of total imports. Belgium, India, France and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +27.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average import price for organo-sulphur compounds other than thiocarbamates, dithiocarbamates, thiuram sulphides and methionine amounted to $6,238 per ton, increasing by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated resilient growth from 2013 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for organo-sulphur compounds other than thiocarbamates, dithiocarbamates, thiuram sulphides and methionine increased by +69.3% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($9,492 per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($2,068 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+13.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the eighth year in a row, China recorded growth in shipments abroad of organo-sulphur compounds other than thiocarbamates, dithiocarbamates, thiuram sulphides and methionine, which increased by 14% to 679K tons in 2024. In general, exports showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 26%. The exports peaked in 2024 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, exports of organo-sulphur compounds other than thiocarbamates, dithiocarbamates, thiuram sulphides and methionine expanded to $2.3B in 2024. Overall, exports showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 with an increase of 29%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $3B. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of the exports of remained at a lower figure.

India (50K tons), the United States (42K tons) and South Korea (38K tons) were the main destinations of exports of organo-sulphur compounds other than thiocarbamates, dithiocarbamates, thiuram sulphides and methionine from China, together accounting for 25% of total exports. Brazil, Russia, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, Japan and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

From 2013 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +22.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($442M), Brazil ($309M) and India ($299M) appeared to be the largest markets for organo-sulphur compounds other than thiocarbamates, dithiocarbamates, thiuram sulphides and methionine exported from China worldwide, with a combined 35% share of total exports. South Korea, Japan, Russia, Indonesia, Thailand, Mexico and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Russia, with a CAGR of +26.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for organo-sulphur compounds other than thiocarbamates, dithiocarbamates, thiuram sulphides and methionine amounted to $5,704 per ton, increasing by 24% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($10,612 per ton), while the average price for exports to Australia ($2,729 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
